If you do not have dental insurance, planning for dental care can feel uncertain. You may want a clearer picture of what routine visits cost, what is included, and how to prepare for treatment that comes up later.
North University Dental offers an in-house monthly dental membership for patients in Fargo. It combines specified preventive services with discounts on many additional services. Here is how the plan works and what to check before choosing an option for yourself or your family.
What is a dental membership?
A dental membership is an arrangement with the practice that provides defined services and discounts in exchange for membership payments. At North University Dental, the plan has a monthly payment and an enrollment fee for each member.
Membership is different from dental insurance and from financing a treatment bill. Insurance benefits depend on an insurance contract. Financing spreads repayment of a balance over time. A membership provides the benefits described in its own plan terms, so it is important to understand what is included before you enroll.
What do North University Dental's plans cost?
Three options listed on our dental payment plans page are:
- Adult Essential: $48 per month, plus a $129 enrollment fee.
- Child Essential: $41 per month for children ages 12 and under, plus a $129 enrollment fee.
- Perio Plus: $99 per month, plus a $129 enrollment fee, with periodontal maintenance every three months.
The enrollment fee applies to each member. Benefits become available after the enrollment fee and first monthly payment are paid. Review the current enrollment information before signing up, including the required membership period and cancellation terms.
What care is included?
The Adult Essential and Child Essential plans list preventive visits every six months, with professional cleaning, a routine doctor exam, routine X-rays, and fluoride at each cleaning. The Perio Plus option is designed around more frequent periodontal maintenance.
Your dental team can explain which option matches your needs and how the included services fit your care schedule. If periodontal treatment has been recommended, ask which services are maintenance and which are separate treatment. A plan that includes maintenance should not be assumed to cover every procedure used to treat gum disease.
The plans also advertise 15% off most other dental services. The word “most” matters: exclusions apply. Before scheduling additional work, ask for an estimate that identifies the treatment, any applicable membership discount, and the amount you would pay.
How do I compare the total cost?
Start with your expected care rather than the monthly price alone. Include the enrollment fee in your budget, review the services included at your chosen visit frequency, and ask about any recommended treatment outside those benefits.
For a household, check each person's needs separately. A child's plan has an age limit, and an adult who needs periodontal maintenance may need a different schedule from someone receiving routine preventive care. The office can help clarify those differences before enrollment.
If you have access to dental insurance, compare the actual benefits and costs of that policy with the membership terms. Do not assume that membership discounts can be combined with insurance benefits or other offers; ask the office first.
What should I know about payments and cancellation?
The membership information lists major credit and debit cards as accepted payment methods and says an HSA card can be used. If you plan to use HSA funds, check the rules that apply to your account and the particular expense.
The plan has an initial minimum membership period. Its cancellation information says membership cannot be canceled before that agreed period ends. Afterward, contact the office to discuss cancellation. Read the enrollment agreement for the exact commitment and billing details rather than assuming a monthly payment means there is no minimum term.
What if I need help paying for additional treatment?
A membership discount and a way to finance treatment address different parts of the cost. North University Dental's financial policy also lists CareCredit as a financing option. Credit approval and financing terms apply. Ask which options are available for your treatment and review the repayment conditions before deciding.
You can also ask the office to explain your treatment estimate, what needs attention first, and what payment is expected. Having those details in advance makes it easier to make an informed decision.
